The 555 Game is a mindfulness exercise designed to help manage anxiety by grounding yourself in the present moment. It is simple, can be done anywhere, and is effective in diverting your mind from anxious thoughts.

Steps to play the 555 Game:

  1. Notice 5 Things You Can See
    • Look around and identify five things you can see.
    • Examples: colours on the wall, shape of a nearby object, expression on someone’s face.
    • Describe each item in detail to yourself.
  2. Notice 5 Things You Can Hear
    • Focus on what you can hear.
    • Examples: hum of a computer, chatter of people, distant sound of traffic.
    • Identify and note five distinct sounds.
  3. Notice 5 Things You Can Feel
    • Bring your attention to your sense of touch.
    • Examples: texture of your clothing, feeling of your feet against the ground, sensation of the air on your skin.
    • Notice and describe five different things you can physically feel.

Why the 555 Game works:

  • The game is rooted in mindfulness practices, which help reduce anxiety and stress.
  • Focusing on the present moment breaks the cycle of negative thoughts.
  • It creates a sense of calm and control.

When to use the 555 Game:

  • Before a stressful meeting or presentation: Ground yourself for a calm, focused mind.
  • During a commute: Stay present and centred.
  • In social situations: Keep yourself grounded and present when social anxiety kicks in.

Tips for success:

  • Practice regularly: The more you practice, the more natural it will become.
  • Personalise it: Adapt the game to what works best for you, such as focusing on 3 things instead of 5 or incorporating deep breaths.
  • Stay patient: It takes time to master. Be patient with yourself as you learn.

The 555 Game is a simple tool to help manage anxiety, offering a proactive way to find calm in the chaos. Practice regularly, personalise your approach, and be patient with yourself. For more strategies on managing anxiety and mental health, reach out for support.
